DGSB® is a high-efficiency anaerobic reactor based on the Denitrifying Granular Sludge Bed process. To overcome the low sludge concentration, low volumetric efficiency and large reactor volume of conventional biological nitrogen removal processes, buoyant denitrifying granular sludge is seeded into the down-flow granular sludge bed of DGSB® for start-up, delivering several dozen times the volumetric load and denitrification efficiency of a conventional bioreactor.
The system delivers high volumetric efficiency, with a maximum volumetric loading rate of 70 kg-N/(m³·d) and total nitrogen removal of up to 98%. It tolerates high concentration shock loads, handling influent nitrate nitrogen concentrations of up to 2,000 mg-N/L.
The process features compact, simple equipment with stable performance, cutting equipment and land occupation costs and reducing capital investment. Operating costs are low: self-agitation is achieved using the gas produced in the reactor, eliminating the mixers and flow boosters required by conventional denitrification. The biomass exists as granular sludge, providing excellent sludge–water separation and allowing further reduction of process equipment.
The DGSB® process applies to the following scenarios:
